HD games optimized for NVIDIA Tegra tablets arriving in Android Market

tegra HD games android
With an avalanche of Android tablets powered by NVIDIA's Tegra 2 on display at CES 2011, it stands to reason that game developers would start releasing titles which can tap the platform's 3D power. A search on the Android Market website shows that's now starting to happen.

Several Tegra-optimized HD games are now listed -- including Samurai II: Vengeance, Spectral Souls, Backbreaker football, Dungeon Defenders, and an HD version of Fruit Ninja. The games range in price from $3 to about $14.50.

The descriptions proclaim smoother 3D, more realistic textures, and an overall superior gaming experience -- and not just when compared to the original Android versions. Samurai II proclaims "even more visual stunning graphics and polished gameplay" than its iOS version.

Take the jump to check out some sweet gameplay footage!

Southwest Airlines' Credit Card Still Makes Economic Sense

There has been some grumbling on the credit forums that Southwest's upcoming changes to its Rapid Rewards program -- and its recent acquisition of budget airline AirTran -- could be bad for cardholders. (By the way, Southwest's credit card is still one of my favorite travel cards, aside from United Mileage Plus. Use the published link here to sign up, and you'll be awarded a free Southwest flight after your first use of the new card -- that includes purchases or balance transfers.)

If anything, the opposite might be true: the purchase of AirTran vastly increases the combined company's flight routes, which means higher inventory for reward travel redemptions... So a greater chance that your flight can be booked for free with existing Rapid Rewards points, rather than paying outright.

One other criticism of the card is that there's a $59 annual fee. Does it still make good economic sense to get a card with a fee attached?

Let's do the math: you get a free flight credit after your first purchase. So let's say you buy a cup of coffee using your new Southwest card at Starbucks for $1.50 (Pike Place Roast, tall). Now you have a flight credit that is worth approximately $225 to $275, according to the various popular flight routes I plugged in on their site this evening.

You would have to pay the annual fee for nearly four years for this not to be a great deal.

Two things to keep in mind: once you have the card, you'll be accruing more Rapid Rewards points on all of your everyday purchases. This will likely lead to more "free" flights over time, significantly outweighing the annual fee. Secondly, it's always possible to get an annual fee waived -- I shouldn't be saying this, since I like to keep these secrets to myself (so I can use them!), but if you are a loyal cardholder who has a pretty solid charge volume each month, it's fairly easy to get the annual fee removed.

Just call a few years down the road and threaten to close your account and take your business elsewhere... Airline credit cards, in particular, spend a lot of money and marketing energy to acquire a new customer. They won't want to lose your business over a mere $59.

Be sure to view more of my credit card offers and promotions over on Outlaw.

Disclosures: I used to review credit cards for a living. Also, my web site has a financial relationship with Chase -- we participate in their affiliate program. No financial relationship or position on Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, or any other company mentioned in this story at time of publication.

Creepy app uses Twitter and Flickr data to track anyone on a map

locate anyone twitter flickr map
When you post a photo online -- especially from a phone with a built-in camera -- you're likely sharing more than the picture itself. The same is true for updates you post on Twitter. Location data is commonly included, and crafty types can do all kinds of creepy things with that information.

A good example of what's possible is Creepy, a desktop app which lets you track a Flickr or Twitter user's position on a map. Just pop in a Twitter or Flickr ID, and if the person has posted any geocoded data Creepy will pin the corresponding locations on a map. Satellite, street, and hybrid maps from Google and Virtual Earth are available, as are OpenAerialMap and OpenStreetMap.

Above, you can see where @scobleizer has been puttering around. Pop in anyone you want and then wait patiently -- Creepy analyzes quite a bit of data, so it can take a while for your results to appear. The mapping magic works as long as the user you search for has enabled geolocation features -- and that likely includes the vast majority of Twitter and Flickr users using a mobile app.

Creepy is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, and the application's source code is also downloadable.

Microsoft Security Essentials vulnerability reminds that security risks are everywhere

Microsoft recently delivered a patch for its malware and antivirus tools, including Security Essentials, Windows Defender, MSRT, and Forefront -- its enterprise antivirus solution. The patch addresses a flaw in Microsoft's scanning engine which could allow an attacker who had a valid username and password to gain elevated rights on a system.

As is often the case with these flaws, the fact that the attacker has valid credentials is arguably a bigger problem than the vulnerability itself. However, there's an important takeaway: at any time, any program on your computer could be putting you at risk. Even your antivirus or anti-malware app.

It's important (and imperative) to keep your operating system and apps as up-to-date as possible. It also helps to know what other programs you can use to ensure your system is safe. Free Windows programs like Secunia PSI -- which scans your system for vulnerable programs -- and Returnil's System Safe -- which lets you complete roll back changes to your computer, including those made by malware -- can be a big help in locking down your system.

Backdoor Trojan For Windows Ported To Mac OS

An anonymous reader writes "A Remote Access Trojan (RAT) for Windows, known as darkComet, has been ported to Mac OS X. The new backdoor Trojan is not yet finished, but it could be indicative of more underground programmers attempting to take advantage of Apple's growing market share."

FullHDMI allows you to mirror your EVO screen on your HDTV

Evo mirror

For all you HTC EVO owners who have anxiously been awaiting the ability to put your HDMI port to its full use, the wait is over. Android Central forums member oorebmas has created FullHDMI, an application which just entered a public beta, that allows EVO users to mirror their devices screen on their favorite HDTV. At this time, root access is required on the device, and it does also need to be running a Sense based ROM, but that is a small price to pay to be able to utilize this amazing application. For more information on the application, the exact requirements, and more information about the app, be sure to check out this thread, and be sure to give it a shot! Two Planets Found Sharing One Orbit

dweezil-n0xad writes "Buried in the flood of data from the Kepler telescope is a planetary system unlike any seen before. Two of its apparent planets share the same orbit around their star. If the discovery is confirmed, it would bolster a theory that Earth once shared its orbit with a Mars-sized body that later crashed into it, resulting in the moon's formation."

Comprehend Systems Wants To Make Data Analysis Less Of A Pain

Founded by Rich Morrison and Jud Gardner, Y-Combinator backed Comprehend Systems is launching the first iteration of its comprehensible data analysis platform today, Comprehend Clinical. Comprehend Clinical's browser friendly interface allows its clients to analyze the results of clinical drug trials across multiple data sources, combining that stored in diverse data structures and databases. In the same space as Sas Institute and Pitco, Comprehend Clinical attempts to empower people bringing drugs to market to "ask as the questions they need to ask." When you're dealing with lengthly drug studies you need to know whether the drug is safe and effective, and whether people are dying as a soon as possible. "A clinical study lasts four years, who uses software that's seven years old. By default you're going to have to interface a lot of stuff," says founder Rich Morrison.

Blog Post: Spring Break Travel Fare Forecast: Tips to Beat the Trends

Higher ticket prices may leave some people out in the cold this year, but those eager to leave home this spring break can still find great deals to popular destinations. Our famed Fareologists at Bing Travel have issued their 2011 Spring Break Forecast and uncovered that the overall average price for shaking the winter chill this year is $489, a 10.5% increase from last year’s $443 average.

Whether you want to go to Florida or overseas, hit the mountain slopes or relax on the beaches of Hawaii, Bing has everything you need to make great travel decisions.  Here are the top takeaways on what our Fareologists uncovered:

  • Given their popularity as destinations for spring break, it’s not surprising to find airfares to warm weather and ski destinations up more than 15% this year – but that doesn’t mean you can’t find a deal.  Flights from Seattle to Salt Lake City are down about 7% from last year, as are flights from Dallas to Jacksonville.  Deals can also be found to Cancun, Mexico’s spring break hotspot, with fares from Philadelphia down 8% and fares from Atlanta down 16%.
  • If you want to escape somewhere warm, Florida is the ticket! Many of the best deals of the season are on flights to Fort Lauderdale, Jacksonville, Miami, Orlando, and Tampa.  Here are a few of the lowest average fares to Florida:
    • Atlanta to West Palm Beach, $181
    • Boston to Jacksonville, $233
    • Chicago to West Palm Beach, $286
    • Philadelphia to Orlando, $217
    • San Francisco to Tampa, $300
  • If you want to cross an ocean, airfare prices are lower this year compared to last year for several European destinations. And since spring is the shoulder season in Europe, you can benefit from great hotel rates and fewer crowds.  Flights from the U.S. to Europe with the greatest drop in average price since last year:
    • Dallas to Paris (-11%)
    • New York to Amsterdam (-13%)
    • Philadelphia to Paris (-12%)
    • San Francisco to Paris (-9%)
    • Seattle to Rome, Italy (-9%)
  • And here are the top 5 warm-weather routes with the lowest ticket price:
    • Atlanta to West Palm Beach, $181
    • Atlanta to Jacksonville, $202
    • D.C. to Ft. Lauderdale, $209
    • Atlanta to New Orleans, $209
    • Houston to New Orleans, $204
  • And the top 5 routes with the highest average price increase over spring break:
    • Dallas to Nassau, Bahamas, $544 (+47%)
    • New York to Vancouver, Canada, $596 (+64%)
    • Seattle to Nassau, Bahamas, $762 (+41%)
    • Philadelphia to San Juan, Puerto Rico, $939 (+54%)
    • Chicago to San Juan, Puerto Rico, $553 (+54%)

To help you get the best possible deal despite the rise in spring break airfare pricing, Bing has great tips and tools that can help you save time and money:

Be flexible. Travelers can save big by avoiding the peak travel times during spring break. For example, you can save $25 to $125 per ticket by travelling from a Monday to Monday or Tuesday to Tuesday instead of from Saturday to Saturday.  It’s best to get a head start on travel and schedule your trip for the first week of March rather than waiting until mid-April to escape the grind. Traveling during the first or last week of March as opposed to mid-March can save travelers $25 per ticket.  Traveling in early April as opposed to the middle of April will save travelers an average of $30 to $50 per ticket.  Use the Bing Travel Flexible Travel graph to help determine the best days to travel.

Use available tools. Whether you’re looking for sandy beaches, snowy slopes, or scenic European vistas, Bing Travel has the tools you need to plan the perfect getaway.  Use Price Predictor to check if rates are rising or dropping so you can save money on flights by buying your tickets at just the right time.  Most airfare price drops last less than 48 hours, so be ready to jump when a fare falls. Travelers with specific travel dates in mind and for whom flexibility isn’t an option are advised to set  Bing Travel Fare Alerts (LiveID required) that will notify them if the fares for their trips drop, allowing them to catch the best fares. When booking a hotel, Rate Indicator helps you find the best deals by showing you which hotels are offering a rate that is lower than their historical rates.

Avoid travel surcharges. Many airlines have imposed holiday surcharges. In addition, many airlines charge extra fees, for checking baggage, having overweight baggage, receiving pillows or meals, and getting aisle or exit row seats. Make sure to be well informed about your airlines’ fees.

Get inspired. Researching future vacations can be a great way to pull out of the winter doldrums.  For inspiration, check out some hot vacation spots around the world that are brought to life visually on Bing.
