?Know Your Meme? On What It?s Like To Be An Internet Folklorist

The website and show "Know Your Meme" were swallowed up this week by ICanHasCheezburger networks in a seven figure deal, proving once again that Internet memes are serious business. In light of this news, the Know Your Meme crew, Internet folklorists Elspeth Rountree, Kenyatta Cheese, Jamie Wilkinson, Patrick Davison and Mike Rugnetta actually performed an episode of their heralded show live on stage today at Web 2.0 Expo.

Evernote Web gets a new interface, Facebook sharing, and more

evernote web
Evernote, the popular multi-platform 'digital memory' app, has done some serious re-tooling of its Web interface. In addition to a more polished UI that more closely mirrors the look of Evernote on the desktop, the update brings features like notebook stacks and snippet view to the Web.

Auto-saving is now enabled as well, and you can select multiple items by holding down the Cmd or Ctrl key on your Mac or Windows keyboard. If you've got items stored in your notebooks that you want to share with friends or co-workers, Evernote has improved that process, too. You can quickly post an item to Facebook, share it via email, or generate a Web sharing link to paste into an IM conversation or status update.

Head over to the Evernote Web login page to try out the new interface.

Rumor: BlackBerry Messenger to land in the App Store on April 26 [Debunked]

Update: Boy Genius Report gets the official word from RIM; BBM is not coming out for iOS on April 26 (and that 'social media conference' where the CEO spoke? Also imaginary). That doesn't mean it never will, but we've erased that "x" from our calendars.

Rumblings of an iPhone version of BlackBerry Messenger surfaced earlier this month from an unidentified source that provided a tip to BGR. Another unconfirmed source has stepped forward with additional information on the MacRumors forums that points to an April 26 debut of the BlackBerry Messenger app in the App Store.

This latest information purportedly comes from an attendee of a social media conference hosted by RIM in Toronto [which never happened -- see above]. During the presentation, RIM's Co-CEO Jim Balsillie supposedly told those in attendance that BBM would make its way to the iOS App Store on April 26. The source also claims the app would be updated this summer with a new notification system. This last piece may be an indirect reference to iOS 5, which may overhaul Apple's current notification system.

Douse this rumor with some pickling salt, kosher salt and table salt as we cannot verify this April 26 date, nor the existence of a BBM app. Based on earlier leaked information and RIM's move to incorporate Android application emulation in its PlayBook tablet, a move to iOS in the upcoming month is not that far-fetched. Anyone a believer?

The image above was provided to TUAW several weeks ago and should not be considered evidence one way or the other of a BBM app.

Startup Visa D.O.A., and Startup America Just a Giant Press Release?

President Obama seems to understand the role that startups play and the contribution that skilled immigrants make to U.S. economic growth. He has talked a lot about the importance of science and engineering, and expressed fears that, unless we improve our game, China and India will out-innovate us. He even visited Silicon Valley recently to talk to its elite. And he has had his Chief Technology Officer, Aneesh Chopra, make several trips here to the Valley. I commend the President for putting a spotlight on entrepreneurship with his Startup America initiative; but I can?t help wondering whether this is just a giant press release. It needs more substance: a way for foreign-born entrepreneurs to start companies here and a leveling of the playing field for entrepreneurs wanting to solve government problems. I debated this with Aneesh Chopra, at the Economist Innovation Summit in Berkeley, last week.

Twitter?s Interactive ?Web Intents? Turn Your Site Into A Lightweight Twitter Client

Twitter has just released a pretty snazzy API tool that allow site publishers to provide users with the functionality of Twitter follows, retweets, replies and favorites without forcing them to leave their own sites. Those interested can invoke an intent by embedding a line of Javascript and HTML, without having build an OAuth app in order to attach these functions.

Doctors Expect Extended Recovery Period For Pedrosa's Shoulder Problem

The recurrence of Dani Pedrosa's shoulder problem during the MotoGP season opener at Qatar came as a blow to the Spaniard. Pedrosa had been hoping that his shoulder was fully healed, after a winter of rest for the problem. But as the race progressed under the floodlights at Losail, Pedrosa started to suffer pain in his shoulder, and weakness and numbness in his left arm, leaving the Repsol Honda rider unable to use the clutch at the end of the race, and having difficulty in getting the bike to turn as he would like.

A medical examination revealed the cause of the problem: Pedrosa has suffered stretching in his brachial plexus, the bundle of nerves located under the collarbone which control movement in the shoulder and arm. The injury was a by-product of Pedrosa's crash at Motegi, caused by a stuck throttle, in which Pedrosa broke his collarbone, stretching his brachial plexus at the same time.

Dragon Age II or Homefront? Which would have the coveted No.1 position? And which game do you think has been on the chart the longest?

Homefront makes the top in its first week. We'll also note the oddity that Pokmon White is outselling Pokmon Black (why?) and that the longest-charting game is not, as you might expect, Just Dance; it's Fifa 11 which has been in the charts for almost six months now.

TUAW's Daily App: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12

Along with the console versions released recently, EA has also dropped an iOS version of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12, featuring the latest and greatest in golf simulation for the iPhone and iPad. As much as other developers may rail against EA on the App Store, there's almost never a question of quality, and this app is no exception. This is a quality golf game that does a great job of replicating a lot of the features of the popular console series, like the controls (yes, you can spin the ball in the air, which may turn some hardcore golfers off, but you don't have to). There's a checklist of pro golfers to play as and against, and eight official courses like the classic St. Andrews and TPC Sawgrass.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 has four different modes to play through, from straightforward solo games to a full PGA Tour mode; mini-games and a "Closest to the Pin" social challenge mix things up quite a bit as well. The one real glaring omission in terms of features is Game Center integration, but EA's eschewed Game Center lately -- hopefully that's not a growing trend.

At any rate, if you like golf and iOS gaming, you'll enjoy this one. It's currently US$6.99 on the iPhone and $9.99 on the iPad, but there is a free version to try out on the iPhone. If you think the prices on this or any other EA app are too high, just wait until EA has yet another sale.

Twitter?s Biz Stone Talks About Awkward Acquisition Meeting With Zuck On Howard Stern

After talking to Conan a few weeks ago, and CNN's Piers Morgan last night, Biz Stone made an appearance on another mainstream media show today: Howard Stern. You can access the interview here. Unlike many of Stern's interviews, this one was mostly PG-rated. One of the most interesting tales revealed in the interview was the backstory behind Facebook's offer to acquire Twitter back in 2008 (the story is at the 16 minute mark in the interview). As we know, Facebook reportedly offered Twitter $500 million to acquire the company in the fall of 2008. Biz tells Stern that he showed up at work one day and Twitter employee Jason Goldman (who is no longer with the company) told him that fellow co-founder Evan Williams was waiting for him downstairs in a car.

BufferZone sandboxing for Windows goes 64-bit, beta available for download

trustware bufferzone pro 4 sandboxing
Trustware BufferZone is a great way to add an additional layer of security to your Windows computer. It's a sandboxing application, which means it helps isolate programs so they can't directly interfere with your Windows installation. Sandboxing is a terrific way to defend against malware infections.

Unfortunately, BufferZone had one serious shortfall. When Windows 7 arrived and the push to 64-bit kicked into high gear, the program wasn't compatible. That has now changed, with the release of BufferZone Pro 4 beta which supports both Windows Vista and Windows 7 x64.

Interested testers can register for the beta, and it's worth trying out. Additional security -- especially at no charge -- is usually worth a trial run.

Amazon Appstore for Android Test Drive hands on: surprisingly cool, but still US-only

Amazon Appstore for Android Test Drive
When Amazon Appstore for Android launched last week, one of its primary features -- Test Drive -- was disabled just a few minutes after it opened. With no try-before-you-buy, no refund process, and 1-Click purchasing ready to strike at any moment, this caused some problems. Anyway, don't despair: Test Drive is now enabled.

Before you get your hopes up, Test Drive doesn't work with every app. The IMDb app works fine -- you can even watch movie trailers on it! -- but the Angry Birds games are sadly not enabled. Some games work surprisingly well, though, like Bubble Buster. There's very little latency, and the framerate is really rather good. The Test Drive experience is so true to life that you even get ads; how cool is that?

Microsoft Launches An Ad Exchange -- Run By Somebody Else (MSFT, GOOG)

AppNexus

Three years after it began considering the business, Microsoft finally announced the launch of its ad exchange.

The catch: unlike Google, Microsoft isn't running the exchange at all. Instead, it will simply put its own ad inventory into an exchange run by startup AppNexus.

Ad exchanges let advertisers place real-time bids for display ads that appear on various sites -- just as they have been able to do with search advertising since the early 2000s.

That's good for advertisers, as it creates serious pricing competition, but could cut into publishers' profits, which is why a lot of online companies have been slow to embrace the concept.

In 2007, Google bought DoubleClick and used its technology to launch an exchange for display advertising in September 2009.

Microsoft actually bought an ad exchange company called AdECN around the same time, but the exchange never showed up.

Instead, Microsoft announced that it would put its inventory into an exchange run by AppNexus -- which it invested in last fall --- instead. AppNexus was started by Brian O'Kelley, who sold his first ad exchange, Right Media, to Yahoo for $850 million back in July 2007

The whole deal is an outgrowth of Microsoft's changing strategy in online advertising. Back in 2007, Microsoft wanted to be a major player in the online advertising business, and spent more than $6 billion acquiring aQuantive to help it get there.

Perhaps it was all a bluff to get Yahoo -- which earned most of its money from display advertising -- to the negotiating table for a search deal.

Whatever the reason, Microsoft now seems content to sell ads on its own network of sites, rather than making a big play to be the advertising technology that drives the Internet.

Help Me Interview Jack Dorsey Tonight

Jack Dorsey is in demand these days. The inventor of Twitter is now back as head of product, while still acting as CEO of his other startup, Square. Tonight, Dorsey and I will guest lecture together at Rachel Sterne's Columbia Business School course on Social Media And Entrepreneurship. Sterne is also New York City's chief digital officer, so it should be a social media extravaganza. We'll be streaming the talk right here on TechCrunch starting around 6PM ET tonight. It's really more of an interview, with questions from the students and the audience at large. If you have a question for Dorsey, leave one in comments below or Tweet them at me during the event @erickschonfeld. I'll be asking Dorsey about his new role at Twitter, where the product needs to go from here, how he will balance that with his role at Square, and how he thinks about designing social products in general. The theme of the lecture is "Social Disruption." Both Twitter and Square are disruptive startups in the media/communications and payments industries, respectively. We'll get into how each company disrupts the current order of things and creates new value in the process.

Element Case Joule Chroma iPad stand works with iPad 2

We've covered the Element Case Joule iPad stand several times here on TUAW, even giving away some specially-made TUAW-logoed stands to several of our readers. Now Element Case has partnered with us again to introduce the new Joule Chroma line of iPad stands, and yes, we will be giving one away.

The Chroma line comes in six bright colors -- orange, red, blue, pink, grey and black -- and there's even a matching Ultrasuede liner to caress your iPad. The Joule stand is set up with rubber pads at the bottom to keep it from sliding across smooth surfaces as you tap on the iPad screen, and the tilt foot magnetically attaches to one of three ports to adjust the angle at which the iPad sits. Finally, there's a speaker port so that your tunes aren't muffled when the iPad is nestled in the stand in portrait mode.

The Joule Chroma isn't for everyone; at US$149.99, it's definitely a luxury item. And you probably don't want to use it with the Smart Cover installed, as you'll want to use this when you're using the iPad 2. But if you're looking for a very classy and well-made machined aluminum product with which to prop up your iPad, the Joule Chroma is a heck of a choice.

Climsy shares images on your clipboard via Dropbox and Imageshack

climsy share images dropbox
Every now and then, there's screen capture or image you stumble across that you just have to share. Climsy is a nice, simple Windows program which makes the process dead simple. It works the way FluffyApp does: take a screenshot or right-click and copy an image to your clipboard in any application, and Climsy will file it to a folder of your choosing or upload to either your Dropbox account, Imageshack, or to Climsy's own server. There's a configurable setting for automatic uploading, and Climsy will report back with a link to your file once the transfer has completed (which you can see above).

Right now, Climsy only supports full screen (Prt Scrn) or single application window captures (Alt+Prt Scrn). We'd like to see a selectable region capture, a la Screenpresso, added to round things out. We'd also like to see support for short URLs, just in case some of our links get a bit lengthy.

Climsy is available as an installer and as a portable application, and it's totally free for both personal and commercial use. It's incredibly lightweight, too -- barely clocking more than 1MB of memory on our Windows 7 test rig.

Hands-on with Android's in-app billing

Youtube link for mobile viewing

In-app billing for Android is a pretty simple thing, really. Say you're playing a game and want to buy a new level, song, weapon -- whatever. All it takes is a couple apps, and you've got the new level, song, weapon -- whatever.

We gave it a go on Tap Tap Revenge -- you should remember our early look at it back at the Honeycomb event at Google HQ. And indeed, it's simple enough. Tap on the song we wanted to purchase, confirm the purchase, and we're on our way. (That was the easy part -- Tap Tap Revenge itself is something of a confounding application, or maybe we're just old and couldn't handle all the flashing lights.)

Anyhoo, look for in-app billing to really take off in the coming months.
