Microsoft invites PS3 jailbreak dev to take a crack at Windows Phone 7

20-something firmware magician GeoHot (George Hotz) has already been sued by Sony for jailbreaking the PlayStation 3, and caused a major stir in the iPhone dev community when he released limera1n. So what next for the ambitious young hacker? How about taking a stab at Windows Phone 7?

The invitation has been handed out, with WP7 lead Brandon Watson offering to ship Hotz a device so that he can give it a go. Microsoft, of course, has said that it fully supports "official homebrew" development for WP7 and met recently with the Chevron WP7 team to discuss community and development-related issues.

The exploit used by Chevron WP7 is due to be patched in the January update for Windows Phone 7, so GeoHot will need to look elsewhere. Still, he's done it twice before, so we wouldn't be at all surprised if he can do it again.

Official FIM 2011 Provisional MotoGP Rider List - Not So Provisional At All

Below is the "provisional" MotoGP entry list issued by the FIM. Given the cost and complexity of a MotoGP entry, it should be regarded as anything but provisional, as all of the names are confirmed, and no new entries are expected, despite rumors that other manufacturers may make a surprise return.

2011 WSS Portimao Test Friday Session 2 Times: Scassa Beats Salom On Drying Track

The final session of testing for the World Supersport class at Portimao was once again disrupted by the weather, with the surface sometimes drying, sometimes wet. Motocard.com Kawasaki's Broc Parkes ended the day as the fastest rider, ahead of Bogdanka PTR rider James Ellison, with the Swedish privateer Alex Lundh taking a very respectable third spot, though three seconds off the pace of Parkes. The mixed conditions render the times rather meaningless, but it will surely be a fillip for Lundh to end the day so far up the timesheets.

Repsol Honda MotoGP Launch: Stoner Hoping To Emulate Doohan

On the eve of the first MotoGP test of 2011, the Repsol Honda team held their launch in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur. There, team boss Shuhei Nakamoto presented Andrea Dovizioso, Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa to the waiting press, and the three riders talked about their hopes for the 2011 season.

Most ominously of all for the rest of the MotoGP field, Casey Stoner told the press how proud he was to be wearing Repsol Honda colors, just like his great hero and role model, Mick Doohan. Stoner has been compared to Doohan many times, as similar in temperament and riding style, as well as in his voracious appetite for victory. In his day, Doohan liked to win the same way that Stoner does now: with a 20 second gap over the competition. From Tuesday, Casey Stoner gets a chance to pursue that ambition, though doubtless Dani Pedrosa, Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi will all do their utmost to prevent him.

Below is the official press release issued after the team launch, and a few photographs from the event:

Macworld Expo 2011: Freehands brings a warm feeling to iOS device users

This week a lot of the U.S. is going to be in a deep freeze. For people who want to use their iPhone, iPod touch or iPad in the great outdoors, that generally means that your fingers are going to be left uncovered and numb with the cold since most gloves can't provide the capacitive touch that the user interface requires.

The son of a glove manufacturer, Freehands CEO Josh Rubin came up with a solution to the cold dilemma in late 2007 when he developed the first Freehands gloves. Many of the glove designs feature finger and thumb tips that fold back to uncover the bare skin of these locations, with magnets to hold the tips out of the way while you poke at your screen. When you're done making a call or taking a note, you can flip the finger and thumb tips back up to keep your hands completely warm.

Freehands also makes a model with a conductive polyamide material on the fingertips that is very popular with runners or other who want to be able to use their iPhones without peeling the glove fingertips back. Both types come in a variety of styles and colors, and use recycled materials whenever possible. A growing number of retailers are carrying Freehands, or you can purchase the gloves online at Freehands.com. The gloves are reasonably priced, ranging from US$16 for fleece gloves made from recycled materials to $80 for cashmere.

I'm happy to say that my black pair of the "folding-finger" gloves will come in very handy this week when the temperatures dip into the -15°F range. There's video of an interview with Josh on the next page that includes a quick demo of how the gloves work.

Connecting your Mac to the internet in Egypt

The political unrest in Egypt and its internet blackout is all the buzz today in international matters. Several TUAW readers have written in asking if we had any advice for Mac users in Egypt to gain access to the internet. The secret in a blacked-out country apparently lies in using cell phones for dial-up networking.

You'll find an excellent write-up for Windows users over at Manalaa.net. The write-up offers step-by-step how-to as well as a list of dial-up provider numbers based in the US and France. For Mac users, accessing dial-up internet is a little more challenging.

As far as we can Google, dial-up internet is not available on the iPhone. TUAW contacted MyWi developer Mario Ciabarra, who said that the technology was theoretically possible, but he was unaware of any product, jailbreak or otherwise, that currently offered that service. Instead, he recommended using a Windows Mobile phone and integrating that with a Macintosh.

We've previously covered dial-up here on TUAW. Former TUAW contributor (now at Macworld) David Chartier posted about Windows Mobile Bluetooth-based dial-up internet back in 2006. The how-to article he originally wrote about is still available over at Mobility Today, although it is a little shy on general details. To summarize, you need to set up your Network System Preferences to allow PPP connections and tweak that connection for the provider's details.

Unfortunately, we do not have any further brand recommendation or connection details. So from here, we turn to the TUAW braintrust, i.e., you, our readers. If you are familiar with particular brands, models and how-to, please jump into the comments with specific advice.

2011 WSS Portimao Test Friday Session 1 Times: Scassa Beats Salom On Drying Track

The weather is a little better at Portimao on Friday morning, but while the track is starting to dry out a little, it's still pretty damp. The Yamaha of Luca Scassa led the way again, clocking a time in the low 1'57s, finishing ahead of an impressive David Salom on the Motocard.com Kawasaki. Sam Lowes was fastest of the Hondas, the Parkalgar rookie continuing to turn heads at his team's home circuit.

The test for the World Supersport riders concludes this afternoon.

15 Scientifically-Proven Things That Will Make You Happier

sleep

Happiness is somewhat in our control.

Studies show that 50% of a person's happiness is genetic, 10% is circumstantial, and 40% is based on intentional activity.

So, how can you shift that 40% in your favor?

Psychologists have found a lot of surprising things that make people happy.

1. Get in touch with your inner animal

Different things make men and women happy. Think of a keg for men and a manicure for women.

Evolutionary psychologist Satoshi Kanazawa says realizing this difference is one of the keys to happiness. "One of the best ways to improve happiness is to recognize and accept that we are animals," she writes.  "We are all designed by evolution to be a certain way, and no amount of denial or fighting will change our evolutionary legacy and its implications. One of the ways that men and women are different is in what makes them happy."

A global Nielsen study of 28,153 people from 51 nations found what makes each sex tick: "Men are happier with money, while women find greater joy in friendships and relationships with their children, co-workers and bosses."

2. Attempt to break a bad habit

A recent study tracked the symptoms of depression in people who were trying to quit smoking.  It was found that subjects were happiest whenever they were successful -- even if they were only successful for one day.

Simply trying to quit was enough to boost the subjects' moods.

Find something you don't like about yourself and nip it pronto for an extra surge of endorphins.

3. Make up to $75,000 and not one penny more

Money doesn't buy happiness; countless studies have proven that.

Why? Because wealthy people usually make money by doing stressful work; they don't spend much time relaxing and enjoying life.

But a new study found that money can make you happy -- if your salary doesn't exceed $75,000.

According to a research report by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, "People's emotional well-being -- happiness -- increases along with their income up to about $75,000."
