Start planning now: Pyeongchang, South Korea, will be the host city for the 2018 Winter Olympics. South Korea has never hosted the Winter Games, but was the host for the Summer Games in 1988.
Pyeongchang is in the Taebaek Mountains, 110 miles east of Seoul. While it is an important winter sports center in South Korea, it is also home to many Buddhist temples that are worth a visit. And military history buffs will note that the Demilitarized Zone between South Korea and North Korea runs through Gangwon province, where Pyeongchang is located.
Excellent news for Olympic travelers: The International Olympic Committee?s technical report rated the South Korean bid very highly for the $3.5 billion plan to keep the venues compact ? the trip to the farthest venue will be 30 minutes ? and the accommodations at a reasonable price, reports the English-language Chosunilbo. And with so many South Koreans so enthusiastic about this venture, there might be no better time to visit.
