Apple debuts iWarp: 'Interstellar travel for the rest of us'
Apple has unveiled a revolutionary new product that promises to change the way we travel forever. Dubbed iWarp, Apple's latest creation is a matter-antimatter reactor only one inch thick that can transport a crew of seven humans to Alpha Centauri and back on a single charge.
"For decades, we've been stuck in low Earth orbit in big, clunky spaceships. They were slow, expensive, unreliable and just not a whole lot of fun to fly. But the iWarp changes all of that. It's interstellar travel for the rest of us," Apple CEO Steve Jobs told reporters and tech bloggers gathered at Apple's "data center" in North Carolina. That data center has in fact turned out to be a state-of-the-art advanced physics research facility where, over the past few years, Apple's engineers have learned to harness Jobs' famous Reality Distortion Field for practical applications.
"The iWarp is incredible, but it's also very simple," Jobs said in a brief demo. "After inserting a small amount of fuel, the user simply taps a destination on the attached Retina Display -- which supports full Multi-Touch capabilities -- and BOOM. iWarp does the rest." Jobs and the assembled reporters then travelled to the Zeta II Reticuli star system, a distance of 12 parsecs, in a matter of seconds.
"And the best part is this," Jobs said after pressing the "Home" button and bringing the awed assembly of reporters back to Earth. "We're selling the iWarp at a price we think our competitors won't be able to match: $999. iWarp comes in black or white, and it'll be shipping in white from day one."
Critics from the Android camp have already dismissed the iWarp as a "toy." Andy Rubin in particular has lambasted Apple for its "closed ecosystem," saying that "users can't input their own space-time coordinates on the iWarp. You can only choose from Apple's pre-approved star systems. This creates a 'walled garden' approach to interstellar travel, which doesn't benefit users as much as Android's open model." When asked when Google expects to deliver a competitive Android-based device, Rubin replied, "We expect to have the Licorice version of Android ready to go in early 2012, but it'll be up to the starship manufacturers if they want to support it."
In a typically terse response to an email criticising Apple's "closed" approach to interstellar travel, Jobs pointed out that "Without precise calculations, you could fly right through a star or bounce too close to a supernova. And that'd end your trip real quick, wouldn't it?"

AVG Mobilation for Android tablets is a full-featured security suite
Called AVG Mobilation for Android, the new app offers protection from malware, and a handful of other useful functions. Mobilation also provides a backup system which can secure your contacts, call logs, bookmarks, apps, and SMS messages. There's an App Locker, which allows you to password protect any app you've got installed on your Android device, and as if that wasn't enough, AVG has also built spam blocking and and task killing functionality into Mobilation.
Free and Pro versions of AVG Mobilation for Android tablets are due soon, but pricing and dates have yet to be confirmed.

Vimeo for iPhone doesn't disappoint

Vimeo for iPhone is a portrait orientation kind of app. Unless you're shooting or viewing video, it wants to be vertical. You're first presented with your video library, aptly named "My Video Library." Across the top of the screen are the Camera and New ("+") buttons, followed by a list of your previously-uploaded videos. These can be viewed in list or thumbnail layout, and sorted by date or number of views. A search function returns results as you type, which is nice.
At the bottom of the screen you'll find buttons for My Videos, Recordings, My Stuff (which includes sub-tabs for Inbox, Watch Later and Likes,) Browse (by channel) and finally account information.
Browsing your videos in list view provides information on views, number of favorites and comments at a glance. Otherwise, tap a video to find those details and more, like tags, privacy setting, stats and licensing options.

Adobe Photoshop for iPad will get real layer support in the future
During the Photoshop World conference's keynote, Adobe has unveiled some details about the next generation Photoshop for iPad, that's being worked on as we speak. Despite the recent feature additions to the current version of Photoshop for iOS, that's still an 'Express' app, and for good reasons -- although quite robust, it's nowhere near as capable as the desktop software going by the same name.
However, that gap is set to narrow with the upcoming (as of yet unnamed) version of Photoshop for iPad, which will bring real layer support for the first time in a mobile image editing app (see image after the break). It will let you add, switch to, and edit layers, and an isometric view will allow you to see the different layers with a quick glance. You'll be able to drag and rotate image objects, and the app will feature a new color mixer that allows blending colors "like a painter," according to the image you can see above.
It's unclear at the moment when Adobe plans to launch the new full-featured Photoshop for iPad, or whether it plans to bring its features to Android or other mobile platforms. One can hope, though.

Power struggles within Google's executive team, which have been brewing since the announcement of long time CEO Eric Schmidt's departure, are apparently bubbling up to the surface. Case in point: In an extraordinary move to illustrate its independence, say sources, the Google webspam team actually classified Google Places as spam and a content farm, and temporarily removed it from search results.
