2011 WSS Portimao Test Thursday Session 2 Times: Yamahas Top Timesheets

Though the track in Portugal remained stubbornly damp, the World Supersport riders once again took to the track en masse, to get more track time during the second day of the official WSBK test at Portimao. This time it was the turn of the Yamahas to star, Italian "Rocker" Luca Scassa taking top spot ahead of his BE1 teammate Chaz Davies. The BE1 team's last minute decision to swap machinery from Triumph to Yamaha appears to have paid off, at least in the wet. The usual gaggle of Hondas followed, led this time by Step Racing's Gino Rea, with Parkalgar rider Sam Lowes once again impressing, and the Bogdanka PTR Hondas of James Ellison and Pawel Szkopek in 4th and 5th. The Bogdanka boys were also the last riders to get under the two minute bracket.

Testing for both the World Supersport and World Superbike teams concludes on Friday, which is expected to be a little drier than Thursday.

Blog Post: Partner Webcast on Feb 17 ? Hosting Geospatial Imagery in the Cloud

Good afternoon! In a few weeks, Kevin Adler, one of our Bing Maps Solution Specialists, will be hosting a webcast about geospatial imagery in the cloud and its positive impact on IT costs. If you?re interested, details are below:

Today?s economy is forcing government agencies to review every aspect of the business to find new ways of reducing expenses while maintaining service. Geospatial services and specifically imagery---which is the largest amount of data and often the most expensive ---is no different.

Hosting geospatial imagery in the cloud reduces the total IT cost of infrastructure as it alleviates the need of owning and maintain servers, software, and staff time to deploy solutions that include geospatial imagery. For government agencies this can serve as a single source hosted in the cloud reducing the need to maintain local server farms.

You?re invited to attend this free webcast presented by Terra Pixel, a Microsoft partner, to learn how managing your agency?s imagery services in the cloud can save taxpayer spend. Using Image Patch Cloud Service from Terra Pixel allows users to securely manage geospatial imagery in the cloud and provide uninterrupted access to your imagery through Microsoft Bing Maps API as well as OGC web services WMS, WMTS, OSGeo, etc...

Attend this webcast and learn how to: i) Reduce the total overall IT infrastructure costs
ii) Use Cloud services from Microsoft to enhance redundancy, security and simplify the challenges of working with massive amounts of data and iii) Streamline the process of updating imagery and distributing it to your customers.

Sinbad gives the keynote at Macworld 2011

Long time Apple devotee Sinbad delivered a very funny keynote address this afternoon at Macworld, talking for about 20 minutes and then taking questions from the audience. He has been coming to Macworld since 1991 and talked about everything from his first Mac, which was a Macintosh 512K that he said had so little memory that putting in his password maxed it out. He joked about Steve Jobs designing the Mac for the dumbest, silliest person in the world. Steve brought some of them into a room and asked them, what can you do? They told him they could click, and that's how it all started.

He thought it funny that whenever someone talks about what will be the next iPhone killer, iPad killer, iAnything killer, everyone gets really interested. However, if you ask what will be the next Android killer -- who cares? Someone in the audience asked what interesting feature will the next iPhone have, and without a beat he said "reception." With the current iPhone, Sinbad noted, "I can shoot movies, solve science problems, but I can't call my Momma." When asked when the government will switch to Macs, he said "Never, cause it would work, and that would be very dark times."

He talked a lot about creativity and that you can do just about anything on an iPad and iPhone. All you need to build a recording studio is a Blue Mikey Mic, a four track app and an iPhone. Friend of his are recording music on just that.

As for Sinbad's favorite apps, he listed 1stVideo, Guitar World Lick of the Day and other apps from Vericorder Technologies. So take it from Sinbad and go out and create something.

Android launcher showdown: LauncherPro, ADW, Zeam, GO Launcher and QuickDesk

Android's greatest, platform-defining feature is customizability. The entire operating system is open-sourced, APIs are laid bare, and almost every user-facing part of the OS can be modified by apps.

There's no surprise, then, that replacement apps exist for almost every part of Android's stock functionality. In turn, to complete the circle of life, new versions of Android incorporate the functionality of replacement apps. It's the ecosystem of replacement apps, in fact, that helps drive Android's disgustingly fast iteration.

Today we're going to look at by far the most popular type of feature-replacement apps: launchers. With strong, age-old offerings from LauncherPro and ADW, and fresh upstarts Zeam, GO Launcher and QuickDesk, the field couldn't be stronger. Competition is driving developers to cram new features in on a weekly basis. The end result, of course, is that you and I get to reap the rewards.

But which launcher replacement is the best? There's only one way to find out.

TUAW Talkcast: The post-Macworld Expo recap

The doors have closed, the carpet has been disposed of, the booths have been dismantled, and the TUAW team is, for the most part, back home from Macworld Expo 2011 in San Francisco. It seems like it was only yesterday that we were setting up Booth 1012 at Moscone West to prepare for the Expo (see photo at right).

It was an amazing and exhausting week and, for the TUAW blogging team, it was also a blast meeting literally hundreds of you who listen to the TUAW Talkcast each Sunday, watch TUAW TV Live on Wednesday, or read the site every day.

Tonight at 10 PM ET (7 PM PT) we'll do a wrap-up of our favorite hardware, software, people, and moments from Macworld Expo 2011. To participate on TalkShoe, you can use the browser-only client, the embedded Facebook app, or the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, for maximum fun, you should call in. For the web UI, just click the "TalkShoe Web" button on our profile page at 4 HI/7 PDT/10 PM EDT Sunday. To call in on regular phone or VoIP lines (yay for free cell phone weekend minutes!): dial (724) 444-7444 and enter our talkcast ID, 45077 -- during the call, you can request to talk by keying in *8.

Run Android 2.3 Gingerbread on your x86 computer

Sure, Android is designed to run on ARM devices, but that doesn't mean it can't run on an x86 system. Older versions of Android were ported, so it's no surprise to see that an enterprising developer has managed to put together a working version of Gingerbread which you can install on your desktop or laptop.

You'll need a 64-bit build environment and the Java 1.6 to get the ball rolling, and you shouldn't expect all your hardware to work. At the moment, only wireless and audio are working -- but that's certainly enough to let you play around with Gingerbread and enjoy the experience a little. Head on over to developer cwhuang's site [machine translated] for more details, as well as the Git repo link you'll need to pull down his Gingerbread x86 code.
